Cornea transplant is a surgery to remove all or part of damaged cornea and replace it with healthy one from a donor. Cornea can be attacked with diseases or injury which might lead the cornea to be removed and replaced with a new section from a health donor.
The cornea should be of good shape and clear for proper vision. One of the reasons for cornea transplant is keratoconus which causes cornea shape to change. Other conditions which can damage the cornea and affect eye vision are scars from trauma and infection. Inherited conditions like Lattice dystrophy and others might also lead to cornea transplant.
Cornea transplant can be carried out under either general or local anesthetic. Surgery usually takes less than an hour and patient can be released on the same day.
We do perform cornea transplant at our facility upon availability of cornea.
